I parked my car on the other side of the street and made sure to lock it before I crossed.
The café was in the heart of the city, but not so close to the water, so I couldn’t hear the waves.
It was a popular place for people to catch up.
Most of its clientele were couples who enjoyed a cup of coffee in a cozy setting.
I had been here once or twice before.
The last time was a year ago.
I couldn’t believe it had been that long.
The café hadn’t changed much since the last time I visited.
It still looked cozy and cute with its mix of contemporary and rustic charm.
Personally, I always thought that the inside was a bit too dark.
Its walls were painted in a dark gray color, and there was only a small window at the front of the café.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to shake away the memories and focus on why I was here.
It was a personal matter, but it also had something to do with my job.
I wasn’t sure how to handle it because I didn’t have any experience in dealing with this kind of situation before.
I bowed my head and stepped inside the café.
A sense of tranquility washed over me as soon as I entered the building.
The sound of soft music filled the air as I walked further inside the café.
Every table was occupied, but there were still a few chairs available at the counter located near the entrance of the café.
I glanced at my watch, and it was ten minutes past two.
Maria wasn’t here yet, so I decided to sit at the counter and order a cup of espresso for myself first while waiting for her.
There were people sitting around me, but they were too busy minding their own business to care about me, which was good.
I wanted to be alone right now.
I took a sip of my espresso and closed my eyes as I leaned against the chair.
It had been a year since the last time I sat here and ordered a cup of espresso.
I remembered the taste of the espresso.
It was strong and bitter, but I loved drinking it, and I would order a cup of it every time I visited this café.
I missed those days, but I knew they would never happen again.
My life had changed forever.
I couldn’t go back to who I used to be before.
An image of my sister popped into my mind, and I felt a lump forming in my throat.
I shook my head, trying to get rid of the image because I didn’t want to think about it right now.
I wanted to focus on something else instead, so I started to look around.
Afterward, my gaze landed on the couple who was sitting at the table next to me.
They were talking and laughing with each other, and there was a sense of intimacy between them.
I didn’t know why, but watching them made me feel a bit envious.
I had everything before, but I didn’t appreciate it until everything was taken away from me.
“Excuse me, sir.Would you like another cup of espresso?”
A female voice interrupted my thoughts, and I opened my eyes to see a young woman with blonde hair standing in front of me.
She looked unsure whether she should approach me, so she shifted her weight from one foot to the other, nervously.
Her name tag read “Maria.”
I gave her a soft smile and shook my head before replying, “No, thanks.I’m okay for now.”
“Okay.” She flashed a bright smile at me before bowing her head slightly and excusing herself.
I watched her walking back to the counter before returning to the table where she had been writing down some orders earlier.
She looked cute in her uniform—her blonde hair was tied into a ponytail, and she wore light makeup on her face, which made her look even more beautiful.
My eyes lingered on her for a few seconds before I turned around and looked at the space behind the counter.
There were two other baristas working there, and they looked like they were in their early twenties as well.
The other two baristas were busy making coffee, and Maria started making another cup of espresso for a customer who was standing in front of the counter.
I turned back and looked at her again.
She was pretty, and she had a bright future ahead of her.
I hoped nothing bad would happen to her.
I took another sip of my espresso and waited for Maria.
Five minutes later, she came over with a smile on her face and placed a cup of hot water in front of me.
“Here’s your hot water, sir.I hope you don’t mind that it’s a bit late,” she said, smiling apologetically.
“No, it’s okay.Thank you.” I nodded and smiled at her before taking the sugar sachet that was on the counter and putting it into the cup of hot water.
“Would you like anything else with your hot water?”
she asked as she stood in front of me, shifting her weight from one foot to the other after she put the cup down.
“Actually, yes.I would like some honey if you have it.”
She nodded and smiled at me before bowing her head slightly and excusing herself.
I watched her walking away from me and returning a few seconds later with a small jar of honey in her hand.
She placed it in front of me before asking, “Is there anything else you need?”
I looked at the jar and then at her.
“No, I’m good.Thank you.”
She gave me another bright smile before bowing her head slightly and excusing herself.
I opened the jar and took some honey before putting it into the cup of hot water.
The barista named Maria had something on her uniform that said “Trainee.”
I wondered if she was an intern or something like that because I saw that she was studying something on the counter earlier.
I didn’t know what it was because I couldn’t see it clearly from where I was sitting.
I turned around and glanced at the table near the counter where she had been writing down orders earlier.
There were cups of coffee and cakes on it.
I couldn’t see what kind of cake it was because it was covered with a white napkin, but the coffee looked delicious.
I took another sip of my espresso and looked around.
There were quite a few people in the café, and some of them were looking at me.
I believed it was because I dressed too well.
I had short black hair, a tall nose bridge, thin lips, thin eyebrows, and narrow eyes.
I wore a dark blue suit with a lavender shirt inside.
The top button was unbuttoned, showing a golden necklace on my neck.
I also wore a pair of black leather shoes with black socks.
My appearance was normal, but I had been working out over the past few years when I was not doing anything else, so I had a pretty good build.
As a result, I still looked quite handsome when I dressed well.
Also, I had an excellent temperament that made me appear gentle and good-looking.
Some people even called me Mr.
John Smith when they saw me.
It meant that I looked like a rich man or something like that.
The other two baristas were busy making coffee for other customers, so Maria came over to serve me again when she saw that the person who was serving me earlier had gone back to the counter.
“I’m sorry for serving you so many times today. How is the coffee?”
“It tastes good,” I said with a smile and nodded at her.
“Then would you like to have another cup?”
she asked with a smile as she looked at me.
I took another sip of my espresso and smiled at her.
“Sure,” I said.
She smiled and bowed to me before going back to the counter.
Five minutes later, she brought me another cup of espresso and said with a smile as she put it down on the counter in front of me, “Here’s your coffee. If you need anything else, please let me know.”
“Thank you.” I nodded and smiled at her.
I could tell that she was doing her best to serve me well and make me happy so that she could get more tips from me.
She was doing pretty well so far because she was very polite and had a nice smile.
Five minutes later, she came over to me again and asked with a smile as she stood in front of me, “Sir, would you like to have some pastries with your coffee? They are fresh and delicious.”
I turned around and glanced at the table near the counter.
I saw that there were two kinds of cakes on it.
One was chocolate cake with nuts on top of it and the other one was Tiramisu with cocoa powder sprinkled on top.
“I would like to have some pastries.” I nodded and smiled at her.
She bowed slightly and excused herself.
I watched her walking away and returning with some pastries after she came back.
She placed them in front of me before asking with a smile after she had done so, “Is there anything else you need?”
“No, thank you.” I shook my head with a smile before taking one of the pastries and eating it.
She nodded and smiled at me before bowing slightly and excusing herself.
It seemed like she liked smiling.
Five minutes later, someone tapped my shoulder.
“Sir, may I ask if everything is okay?Is there anything else you would like to have?If not, your bill will be ready soon.”
It was Maria who had tapped my shoulder.
She stood in front of me and looked at me with a smile after she asked.
I nodded after looking at her for a few seconds.
Maria smiled at me before bowing slightly and excusing herself.
He’s not drinking any wine?”
The man who was sitting at the bar counter and drinking wine turned his head to look at me after he heard Maria’s question.
Maria glanced at the man and shook her head.
“He’s not drinking any wine.
He only drinks espresso and eats some pastries.”
“Maybe he has already had enough caffeine today!
He doesn’t want to drink any more wine!”
The man at the counter laughed and said, “You’re a pretty good barista!
You can tell what your customers want to drink by looking at their faces!”
Maria smiled and shook her head.
“I’m just guessing.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
If not, I’ll go and prepare your bill now.”
The man at the counter nodded and looked at me with a smile.
As for me, I turned around and looked at the man.
He was about sixty years old with short white hair and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses on his nose bridge.
He was wearing a light blue shirt with a dark blue suit over it.
His pants were black.
It seemed like he was a businessman or something like that.
Also, he was drinking expensive red wine at the bar counter, so he must have been rich.
He was handsome when he was young, but he did not look very good now.
“Barista, may I have the bill now?”
The man at the counter asked as he looked at Maria who was standing near me after she had finished talking to me.
Maria nodded at him before bowing slightly to him and excusing herself.
The man at the counter nodded and turned around to drink his wine while waiting for Maria to bring him the bill.
As for me, I asked Maria to give me the bill after I had finished eating my pastries and drinking my espresso.
She smiled and nodded before bowing slightly and excusing herself.
Five minutes later, she came back with the bill in her hand and put it down in front of me before saying with a smile, “Here is your bill.If you need anything else, please let me know.”
“Thank you.” I nodded and smiled at her before taking out my wallet from my pants pocket and paying the bill with my credit card.
As she watched me put my wallet back in my pants pocket, she smiled at me and bowed to me again before asking with a smile, “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
I took the receipt that she had given me earlier and put it in my wallet before nodding at her after taking a look at her.
“No, thank you,” I said with a smile as I stood up from my chair.
I waved at her after saying that before turning around and leaving the café.
