a schoolgirl vampire stalks her next female victim
As I sit in the school library, reading a book about a girl who falls in love with a vampire, I can’t help but notice a girl across from me.
She has long black hair that cascades over her shoulders like a waterfall and bright blue eyes that seem to pierce through the world around her.
She’s clad in a typical school uniform, with a plaid skirt that’s too short for my taste and a white collared shirt that’s unbuttoned one button lower than is appropriate.
Her face is heart-shaped, with high cheekbones and full lips.
She’s beautiful and innocent looking, which is exactly what I’m looking for.
I’ve been at this school for weeks now, blending in with the other students, and she’s the one who’s caught my eye.
I can practically taste her blood on my tongue as I watch her stand up from the table she was sitting at and walk over to the librarian to check out the book she was reading.
I don’t know her name yet, but I will soon.
I always do.
My name is Serena Blackwood, and I’m a vampire.
I’m also centuries old, but I don’t like to think about how long I’ve been alive.
It makes me feel even more dead inside than I already am.
When the girl turns around, she glances in my direction, and our eyes meet.
For just a moment, I can see the innocence in them, and then she looks away.
A shiver runs down my spine as it always does when I see my prey for the first time.
It’s a thrill that never gets old.
There’s just something about Emily Thompson that captivates me, something that goes deeper than just her beauty.
Another student passes by my table, breaking my concentration, and when I look up again, Emily is gone.
I close my book and put it back on the shelf before leaving the library myself.
The halls are packed with students heading to their next class, and I can’t see Emily anywhere among them.
But I know where she’ll be.
She has AP Calculus with Mr.
Jones, which means she’ll be on the east side of the building on the third floor.
I walk quickly, pushing past people in my haste to get to my destination.
I can’t let anyone else take her before I do.
Not when she’s finally so close.
The bell rings just as I’m reaching her classroom, so I stand at the door as students pour out into the hallway around me.
I watch them all, scanning every face until she appears.
Emily smiles at someone who’s talking to her before turning to enter her classroom.
She doesn’t know it yet, but this is where she’ll meet me.
I slip into a seat in the back of her classroom where she can’t see me, and then I wait.
My heart is pounding in my chest in anticipation.
It’s been so long since I’ve done this, but it doesn’t make it any less thrilling.
The class ends too soon, but when it does, Emily is the first one out of her seat.
She gathers her things quickly, throwing them into her bag before turning toward the door.
She almost looks like she’s in a hurry, which makes my blood turn cold.

But then I remind myself that she doesn’t even know me yet, which means she can’t be avoiding me on purpose.
As soon as I see which way she’s headed, I follow behind her, trying to blend in with the crowd of students who fill the hallway.
She moves quickly, which makes it hard for me to keep up with her at times.
My hunger grows with every step I take, but there’s something else there too, something that feels unfamiliar even though it shouldn’t be.
I can’t put my finger on what it is, but it distracts me from the task at hand.
Emily is surrounded by friends now, laughing and smiling as they all make their way toward their next class together.
It’s maddening how difficult they’re making this for me, but soon enough, it won’t matter.
Soon enough, they won’t even be here anymore.
But that doesn’t change the fact that I need to feed soon or my strength will start to wane.
Emily laughs again, piercing through the noise of the crowded hallway around her, and this time, something about it seems almost desperate.
My patience is wearing thin as I watch her interact with her friends just a few feet away from me.
I need to get her alone, but I’m running out of time to do it now that there are so many people around.
Just as I’m about to make my move, the warning bell rings, signaling that they only have five minutes to get to their next class.
Cursing under my breath, I step back into the hallway before anyone can bump into me or call me out for being there.
If I’m going to do this, I need to wait for the next break in her schedule, which means she’ll be in her last class for the day before I can take her home with me.
But I can be patient, I remind myself as I fall back into the crowd of students making their way to their next class.
She won’t slip through my fingers now that I’ve finally found her, no matter what it takes to keep her here with me.
Emily is standing in the middle of the crowded hallway with her friends when the last bell rings, signaling the end of the school day.
They’re discussing plans for the weekend, and Emily’s eyes light up as she listens to them talk about a party happening on Friday night after the football game.
From what I can tell, it sounds like it’s going to be a rager, which might mean that she won’t have time to go home with me like I’d hoped she would before then.
But it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
There will always be another opportunity for me to take her somewhere private where no one will be able to find us.
Or at least where no one will be able to find us until it’s too late for them to do anything about it.
As soon as Emily’s friends leave, I fall back into step behind her again, watching as she moves down the hall toward her locker like nothing is wrong or out of place around her.
If she has any idea what’s really happening, she’s doing a good job of hiding it from the rest of us.
Eternal Thirst: Innocence Betrayed
A shiver trails across my skin when I watch her from across the hall, and I have to take a step back before I go to her too soon and end up doing something that will tip my hand to everyone around me who doesn’t know what I am or why I’m really here in their world with them.
There’s something about her that’s drawing me to her, like I can’t stay away from her even if I want to, and I can’t figure out why she’s making me feel this way or why it’s happening now when there’s never been anyone else before her that’s made me feel anything at all, except for my insatiable hunger that I can never seem to satisfy, no matter how many times I feed or how much I take from my victims before I finally let them go again once they’re no longer useful to me in their current state.
Being this close to her is making my mouth water and my teeth ache with an intensity that I haven’t felt since I first woke up alone and afraid in my new life as one of the undead so many centuries ago, and it’s scaring me more than it should, considering what I am and why I’m here among them right now when I could be anywhere in the world doing anything that I want without worrying about any sort of rules or consequences or anything else that anyone else might be able to do to stop me.
But I can’t stop myself from watching her, no matter what it might mean for me or for her or for anyone else who might see us here together as I move to the other side of the hallway to get a better view of her when she stops at the end of the hall to say goodbye to some friends who are going in another direction than she is to get home, and I have to remind myself again that I shouldn’t be this close to her right now, even though I want to be for reasons I don’t understand yet, considering who she is and why she’s here with me right now when she doesn’t know the truth about anything at all, which is why I need to fix that before I can do anything else with her like I want to do right now before it’s too late for either one of us to do anything about it.
