The journey of a thousand miles
I stand at the edge of the cliff, my toes hanging over the edge as the wind whips my hair around my face.
The endless ocean stretches out before me, the waves crashing on the rocks far below.
It’s beautiful and terrifying, just like life.
My heart races and my hands shake as I take in the view, but I’m not afraid.
I’m determined, because I’m going to do this.
And nothing is going to stop me.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath, preparing myself for what lies ahead.
This cliff has always been a special place for me, ever since I was a little girl.
My parents used to bring me here all the time, to watch the sunset and play in the sand.
I have so many memories of this place, and I always come back here when I need to think.
And right now, I need to think.
“Are you ready?”
I turn to see Alex standing beside me, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans as he looks out at the ocean.
He’s tall and lanky, with messy blond hair and sparkling blue eyes that seem to be laughing at me right now.
It’s been this way for as long as I can remember.
I get myself into these crazy situations and he just looks at me with that stupid smile on his face, like he knows it was bound to happen sooner or later.
It drives me crazy sometimes, but right now it’s comforting.
It reminds me that no matter what happens, he’ll be there beside me through it all.
I’ve never been more grateful for that than I am right now.
“Yeah,” I say with a nod.
“Let’s do this.”
We turn around and I take one last look at the ocean before I force myself to turn away.
I take Alex’s hand as we start down the path that leads away from the cliff and out of town.
The sun is shining and there isn’t a cloud in sight, but there’s a storm coming.
And there’s no telling how long it will last or how much damage it will leave in its wake when it’s over.
But we have each other.
And no matter what happens, we’ll make it through together.
The sound of the waves below fades away as we leave the cliff behind and head down the path that leads into town.
The air is filled with the sounds of birds chirping and cars honking and people talking as we make our way through town and toward the bus station where we’re supposed to meet Sarah.
My heart is racing and my hands are shaking again as we walk, but I try to push the fear aside and focus on the task at hand.
We’re not going back now.
We’ve come too far to turn back now.

We walk in silence for a while, and I can feel Alex watching me out of the corner of his eye as we go, but I don’t say anything.
I know that he’s worried about me, and about what we’re about to do, but he knows better than to try and talk me out of it now.
We both know that there’s no turning back now, even if we wanted to.
But as we get closer to the bus station and the time draws nearer for us to leave, he finally breaks the silence.
“I can’t believe we’re actually doing this,” he says with a nervous laugh as we walk along the sidewalk.
“I know,” I say with a sigh as I glance up at him and squeeze his hand tightly in my own.
“But we have to do this.”
He looks down at me and nods slowly before his lips curve into that stupid smile again and he reaches up to brush a strand of hair out of my face.
“I know we do,” he says with a nod as he looks ahead at the bus station with determination in his eyes.
I try to push the fear aside and focus on the task ahead as well, but it’s difficult when the fear has its claws dug so deeply inside of me that it’s all I can think about right now.
But if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s pushing past my fears and doing what needs to be done anyway.
So I take a deep breath and force myself to keep walking as we approach the bus station and step inside.
We make our way over to the ticket counter and buy our tickets before stepping outside again and waiting on the curb for Sarah to arrive so that we can finally leave this place behind us and go on our journey together.
But as we stand there waiting, something catches my eye from the corner of the parking lot and I turn to see a figure standing on the edge of the cliff above us with her hood pulled up over her head so that her face is hidden from view as she looks down at us from above.
“Who is that?”
I ask as I take a step closer to Alex and look up at the figure on the cliff.
“I don’t know,” he says with a shake of his head.
“But I don’t like this.”
I nod in agreement and we turn to go back into the bus station, but I stop and turn around when I hear someone calling out to us from behind.
“I’ve been looking for you,” she says as she walks up to us and pulls her hood back to reveal that she’s a young woman with dark hair and hazel eyes.

“Sarah,” I say as I look at her in surprise.
“What are you doing here?”
“I had to see for myself that you were really going through with this,” she says with a smile as she looks down at me.
“And now that I know you are, I want to come with you and help.”
“What do you mean, help?”
I ask as I raise an eyebrow in confusion.
“I can’t let you go on this journey alone,” she says as she looks up at me and takes my hand in hers before motioning towards Alex.
“And I think you could use our help, too.”
“Us?”
I ask as I turn to look at Alex.
He nods in agreement as he takes my hand in his and squeezes it tightly.
“We’re all in this together, Em.”
I nod in agreement as we all stand there holding hands for a moment before someone from inside the bus station calls out that our bus has arrived and it’s time for us to go.
I take a deep breath and step forward with a determined look on my face as I take my hand out of theirs and walk over to the bus.
“Are you ready for this?”
I hear Alex ask as he falls into step beside me.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I say with a nod as I look over to see Sarah standing beside me with her hand on the strap of her bag as she looks back at me with a smile.
I take a deep breath and nod in agreement before we turn to go get on the bus together and leave our old lives behind us once and for all.
A storm was brewing as we stood on the cliff’s edge and watched as the first drops of rain began to fall from the sky above.
It was a storm like any other that we had ever seen before, but as we stood there watching it approach from the distance, the intensity of it made me wonder if maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.
But then I took another step forward and felt the presence of Alex standing beside me as he took my hand in his and squeezed it tightly before motioning for Sarah to step forward so that we could all go together.
And as soon as she did, all doubt in my mind began to fade away as I took a deep breath and reminded myself why we were really here.

The sky was still dark by the time we finally arrived at our destination, but as soon as we got out of the car, we knew that we were in the right place.
“How long have we been driving?”
Alex asks as he looks around in confusion before we all turn to see a figure walking towards us from the road.
“Who’s that?”
I ask in surprise as I take a step forward to see if maybe there was something that I wasn’t seeing, but then my heart stops when I notice the pendant that she is wearing around her neck catching the sunlight as she takes another step forward.
“We don’t know,” Sarah says with a shrug before she turns to the others and takes her bag off of her back before reaching inside to grab a weapon so that we would all be ready for whatever came our way.
“What do you want?”
The figure calls out to us as she takes another step forward, but then she stops walking when she sees that we all have weapons in our hands and raises her hands in defeat before taking another step forward.
“If you wanted to help, you could’ve offered before now,” Alex says as he lowers his weapon just enough to put it back on his belt so that he could take a better look at her.
“What do you want?”
“To help,” she says with a smile as she lowers her weapon and takes a step forward, but then stops when she sees us all start to inch forward so that we would be able to get to our weapons if we needed them.
“It’s okay,” she says with a smile before she holds her hand up in defeat so that we would see that she isn’t holding a weapon in it anymore.
“I don’t want to hurt any of you.”
“Then why are you here?”
I ask in surprise as I take a step forward so that I can finally get a good look at her face, but then stop when I notice how long her hair is and how green her eyes are.
“I want to help,” she says with a shrug as she looks up at us with a smile, but then stops when she sees us all start to inch towards our weapons again.
“But first, I need for you to tell me your names.”
“Why do you need to know our names?”
Sarah asks as she watches the woman looking around in confusion before taking the pendant off from around her neck so that she could show it to us, but then stops when she sees Sarah take hers off as well and put it up against the woman’s so that she would be able to read the writing on it too.
“I know what you are,” the woman says in surprise as she takes a step forward to take another look at the necklace, but then stops when she sees Alex inch towards his weapon again so that he would be ready to use it if he needed to.
“But how?”
“How do you know what we are?”
Alex asks as he takes his weapon off of his belt so that he will be able to use it if he needs to, but then stops when he sees Sarah inch towards hers too so that she will be ready to use it if she needs to as well.
“Who are you?”
