Ethan Ford
I am a professional football player for the Dallas Chargers, and I have been with the team for seven years.
I was surprised to see my ex-best friend and lover, Ava Thompson, at team headquarters after she was hired as an analyst and consultant for the Chargers.
Ava and I were once inseparable, growing up together under the same roof and sharing everything.
However, we had not spoken in ten years, and I was curious to reconnect with her.
Ethan Ford: first-person protagonist, male, pro football player, ex-best friend and lover of Ava Thompson, athletic build, determined and passionate.
Ava Thompson: protagonist, female, analyst and consultant for Ethan's team, ex-best friend and lover of Ethan Ford, intelligent, secretive.
The door on the other side of the office swung open and I followed the sound of voices until I stood in front of my new office.
The sound of a throat clearing had me glancing up to find Ava standing in front of me.
I blinked several times before my body froze.
Her hair fell in loose waves around her shoulders instead of pulled back in a ponytail like it used to when we were growing up.
Her green eyes had dark circles under them like she hadn’t slept in days.
She’d always been pretty, but now she was breathtaking.
My tongue felt thick in my mouth as I swallowed hard.
“Ethan,” she said softly.
Was it possible that we’d been in the same building this entire time and I hadn’t sensed it?
As soon as she said my name everything inside of me came to life.
I wanted to reach out to her; to hug her or touch her hand or kiss her like we had all those years ago.
I’d missed her so damn much.
I closed my eyes tightly for a moment before taking a step back away from her.
I needed to get myself under control.
“I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be working in here with you for the next few weeks,” she said.
“Okay,” I managed to croak out.
She nodded once before turning back into the office.
My body fought against my command to stay put as I watched her walk away from me.
My gaze dropped down to her ass—her perfect round ass—one that I’d seen countless times without any clothes on at all.
God, I’d missed her.
Ava Thompson had been my best friend since birth.
Okay not really but it felt like that considering our parents were best friends and we lived next door to each other until she went away to college ten years ago.
Her mom died when she was little and her dad died when she was in college but they’d always lived with us.
Ava was an only child so when her dad died without any family things got complicated fast.

My parents had decided to keep their house and Ava and I had continued to grow up together.
I had been so excited to see her when she returned a few months ago and my heart had felt whole again for the first time since I’d lost my parents.
But then I’d remembered all the things that had happened between us and I’d pushed those feelings aside.
I wasn’t sure what made me more nervous—that we were working together or that we were living next door to each other again.
Ava and I had been inseparable growing up.
We’d shared everything with each other.
But then something changed—probably when we started having sex—and Ava stopped telling me things.
She’d grown distant and even though I’d tried to get her to open up to me, she never did.
I’d let the distance between us grow until I couldn’t take it anymore.
And then one night I’d done something stupid.
I’d betrayed her trust and that was something that I would never be able to take back.
I looked over at Ava who was on the phone and my heart stuttered in my chest.
I’d missed having her around so much.
Just being near her made me happier than I’d been in a long time.
She glanced over at me before looking away quickly.
It might seem like I was staring at her but the truth was that I couldn’t help it.
Ava was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen and being in the same room with her made it impossible for me to concentrate on anything else.
Of course, it didn’t help that we were in the middle of a football game and being able to concentrate on anything else could cause us to lose the game, but even if it wasn’t, I still wouldn’t be able to look away from her.
I stood up and crossed the room so that I could lean against the wall next to where she sat at the desk.
She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye for a second before turning her head to look at the computer screen in front of her.
I could feel the heat of her body next to mine and it made my skin hum with awareness.
Her dark hair smelled like strawberries and vanilla—just like always—and I took a deep breath inhaling her scent, hoping to calm down enough to be able to focus on the game I needed to analyze for her.
She turned her head slightly but kept her gaze on the computer screen in front of her so that our eyes met.
I reached out to put my hand on her arm to steady myself and she flinched slightly, causing me to pull back as if I’d been burned.
“I’m sorry,” I said, keeping my voice low so that no one would overhear what I said.
I’d said those words to her so many times over the years that I wasn’t even sure what I was apologizing for anymore.
But it didn’t change the fact that I knew I was the reason why Ava kept her distance from me.
She’d never said the words out loud but I knew in my heart of hearts that it was true.
She hated me and it was my fault that we’d grown apart.
I’d been so lost after my parents died that I didn’t even know who I was anymore and when Ava stopped talking to me, I’d hated myself even more than I already had.
