I’m a journalist.
And I’m a good one.
I have a reputation for uncovering the dirtiest government secrets, even when it seems impossible.
But when this email landed in my inbox, I didn’t know what to think.
The subject line was “HAARP”.
The message itself?
Just a few words: “It’s HAARP, Lucas.I’m sure of it.”
HAARP is the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, a weather research program that’s been around since the nineties.
It’s also been the subject of more conspiracy theories than I care to think about.
It uses high-powered radio waves to study and manipulate the atmosphere, and while the US government claims it’s solely for scientific purposes, some people believe it can be used as a weapon of mass destruction.
A few months ago, a friend of mine mentioned they’d been seeing an increase in their activity lately, but I didn’t think anything of it at the time.
But then… natural disasters started happening all over the world.
There was the massive earthquake in Haiti that killed hundreds of thousands of people.
The deadly blizzard that hit the east coast, and the one that struck Europe.
The hurricane that passed through Brazil and caused extensive flooding in the Amazon, where my friend Sofia was living and working.
All of which were extremely rare for their regions and happened around the same time frame.
And when I started looking into them, I found reports of strange lights in the sky occurring at or right before each one.
Lights that looked just like the ones created by HAARP’s ionospheric heaters.
I needed to know if there was a connection between HAARP and these disasters, but I didn’t know where to start.
Then this email arrived in my inbox out of nowhere.
I responded as soon as I could, but the email address was already gone.
I tried tracking its origin but couldn’t get past the firewalls and encryption.
Whoever sent this was serious about staying hidden.
There was only one person I could think of who might be able to help me look into this further: Sofia Santos.
Sofia and I had studied together at the university and had stayed in touch ever since we graduated, even though she’d moved back to Brazil while I stayed in the US.
She was one of the smartest people I knew and worked on experimental weather research in the Amazon now.
It was hard getting in touch with her because of how remote her location was and the lack of phone signal and internet access, but I called her anyway and waited for her to answer.
“Lucas?” her voice said after a few rings.
“I hope you have good news for me if you’re calling this early.”
I looked at the clock on my computer and frowned.
It was almost two in the morning on the east coast, which meant it was only ten o’clock in the evening in Brazil.
She sounded like she’d been woken up by my call and I felt guilty about that.
“Sorry,” I said.
“I didn’t mean to wake you up.”
“Who cares if you did?”

“Do you know what time it is here?”
“Of course I do.” She let out an exasperated sigh.
I’m sorry, you know I didn’t mean that.I’m just tired and cranky.”
I smiled at her grumpiness and said, “I know.I’m sorry.I wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t important.”
“It’s okay,” she said with another sigh.“What’s up?Did you need something?”
I took a deep breath and said,
“I got an anonymous tip about HAARP and I need your help to look into it.”
For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line and then she said,
“Why do you care about HAARP all of a sudden? That’s old news.”
“It’s not just me.” I hesitated for a moment before saying, “A few months ago, someone mentioned seeing more activity at the HAARP facility. And they’ve been busy lately. It looks like they’re causing natural disasters.”
Sofia was silent for a moment before saying, “What kind of activity? And what disasters are you talking about?”
“Earthquakes, blizzards, hurricanes. There have been reports of strange lights in the sky happening right before each one.And the lights look like the ones created by HAARP.”
She was quiet again for a moment before saying in a voice so low I could barely hear her,
“That’s… that’s not possible.”
“Why do you say that?”
“I don’t know much about HAARP and the way they work, but they’re not capable of causing earthquakes or hurricanes. They can only manipulate the weather.”
“Are you sure about that?”
She paused for a moment before saying,
, Lucas, you’re not going to believe this, but… it looks like you may be right.”
I waited for her to continue and when she didn’t, I said, “Go on.”
“I’ll have to show you the data, but from what I can tell, HAARP was manipulating the weather patterns in the area of these disasters to make them happen.”
“You can do that?”
“In theory, yes,” she said.
“It’s not easy, but it can be done if you know what you’re doing. The real question is why?”
“What do you mean?”
she said with a frown in her voice.
“If HAARP is causing these disasters, what’s the point? And why now? They’ve been around for years without causing problems before.”
“Maybe they’re testing their new machine?”
“I don’t know.” She sighed and said, “But that’s not all.”
“What else did you find?”
Whispers of Deception
She was quiet for a moment before saying, “I don’t know if they’re connected, but there are two things that seem strange to me.” She paused again and when she spoke this time, there was a new urgency in her voice.
“I’m working on a project for INPE, tracking climate change in the Amazon. We have a research station out here in the middle of nowhere. It’s just me and a few other scientists in a small building surrounded by trees.”
I waited for her to continue and when she didn’t, I asked, “And there are people there?”
I know it sounds paranoid, but our station is so far off the grid that we almost never see anyone. But a few weeks ago, there were two men who showed up here unannounced and asked a lot of questions about my work. They kept asking me if I’d seen anything unusual in the sky.” She paused for a moment before saying in a worried voice, “And now that you mention those lights… What if they were part of something bigger?”
I felt a chill run up my spine as I realized just how much danger Sofia was in, and it took me a moment before I could speak again.
“And what’s the other thing?”
“I was working on the final stage of my research project when the government suddenly approved more funding for it.I know that sounds like a good thing, but it was so sudden and unexpected.I’ve never seen anything like it before.” She paused again and when she spoke this time, her voice was tinged with sadness.“And then this morning, I found an email in my inbox from someone at the Ministry of Science and Technology. They want to come out here next week to see my work.”
I was so surprised by her confession that I didn’t know what to say, and it was a moment before I could speak again.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this before?”
“I didn’t think it was important at the time.I thought it was just a coincidence or maybe they finally realized how important my work is.”
“And now?”
“And now…” She hesitated for a moment before saying, “I don’t know what to think anymore.”
“I’m glad you told me about this,” I said after a moment.“But what do you want me to do?Should we go to the police or something?”
“No.” She paused and when she spoke again, her voice sounded more determined than before.
“I need your help.I think we’re onto something big here, and we need to find out what’s going on.But we can’t do it out here in the jungle. We need to go somewhere where we can get more information.” She paused and when she spoke again, there was an excitement in her voice that I hadn’t heard in years.
