I didn’t want to be a political intern.
Governor Mitchell's eyes narrowed as he saw Theo and me together.
I wanted to be a fashion intern, or maybe even a music intern.
But I was a political intern because my best friend, Theo, was the governor’s son and he’d just been accepted to Yale.
"Theo, I need you in my office now," he barked, ignoring me entirely.
Theo hesitated, glancing at me with a worried expression before nodding and following his father out of the room.
He’d be leaving for college in the fall, and I’d do anything to spend as much time with him as possible before he left.
Even if it meant spending my summer working on his dad’s campaign.
I stood there, my heart pounding in my chest.
Theo and I had been best friends since we were six years old, when I’d moved into the house next door.
The tension in the air was palpable, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
I needed to know what they were discussing.
We’d been inseparable ever since.
We did everything together—homework, sports, movies, you name it.
Quietly, I slipped out of the conference room and made my way down the hall.
We even went to prom together, not as dates but as friends.
The governor's office door was slightly ajar, and I could hear their voices inside.
I pressed myself against the wall, straining to listen.
And now that high school was over, I couldn’t imagine my life without him.
"What were you thinking?" Governor Mitchell's voice was sharp and accusatory. "These scandal photos could ruin everything!"
So when he told me he was going to be an intern on his dad’s campaign for the summer, I knew I had to do it too.
"I didn't do anything!" Theo's voice was defensive, tinged with frustration. "I'm being set up!"
The campaign office was a whirlwind of activity when I arrived.
"Don't lie to me!" The governor's voice rose in anger. "I need answers, Theo. Now."
"I'm not lying!" Theo shouted back. "Why can't you ever trust me?"
People in suits and skirts rushed around, clutching clipboards and talking into headsets.
My stomach churned as I listened to their heated exchange.
I felt out of place in my jeans and t-shirt, like a fish out of water.
"Nova, right?"
I could hear the pain in Theo's voice, the desperation.
A stern voice cut through the chaos.
I wanted to burst in and defend him, but I knew it wasn't my place.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash from inside the office.
I turned to see Governor Mitchell standing there, his eyes piercing through me.
"Yes, sir," I stammered.
He handed me a list of tasks without a smile.
Secrets of the Governor's Son
My heart leaped into my throat, and without thinking, I pushed open the door and rushed inside.
"Get started on these. We need all hands on deck."
I nodded, feeling the weight of his expectations pressing down on me.
Theo stood over a broken vase, shards of porcelain scattered across the floor.
His face was flushed with anger, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
Theo was nowhere to be seen, which only added to my anxiety.
Governor Mitchell stood on the other side of the desk, his expression a mix of shock and fury.
I found my desk in a corner of the office and sat down, trying to make sense of the tasks before me.
"What's going on?" I demanded, looking between them.
Secrets of the Governor's Son
"Nova, this is none of your business," Governor Mitchell snapped. "Leave us."
"No," I said firmly. "I'm not leaving until I know what's happening."
Filing reports, making phone calls, organizing schedules—it all seemed so mundane compared to what I had imagined.
Theo looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and frustration. "It's okay, Nova. I've got this."
As I settled in, I couldn't help but overhear a heated conversation coming from the governor's office.
The door was slightly ajar, and voices spilled out into the hallway.
"Clearly you don't," I shot back. "You're standing over a broken vase, for crying out loud."
"This scandal could ruin everything!"
Governor Mitchell's eyes blazed with anger as he turned to Theo. "This is exactly why I can't trust you. You're reckless and irresponsible."
Theo's jaw tightened. "You never give me a chance to prove myself."
The governor's voice was unmistakable.
"We need to handle this discreetly."
"Because every time I do, you mess up!" The governor's voice was like ice.
His chief advisor responded in a hushed tone, but I could still catch snippets of their conversation.
"That's not fair," Theo retorted. "You don't even know what's really going on."
"And whose fault is that?" Governor Mitchell countered. "You're hiding things from me."
"Theo's involvement complicates things. We can't afford any leaks."
My heart skipped a beat at the mention of Theo's name.
"I'm trying to protect you!" Theo shouted.
The room fell silent for a moment, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
What scandal?
What had Theo gotten himself into?
Secrets of the Governor's Son
I tried to focus on my work, but my mind kept drifting back to that conversation.
I could see the hurt in both their eyes, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air.
Finally, Governor Mitchell spoke again, his voice quieter but no less intense. "Theo, if you're involved in something dangerous, you need to tell me now."
Secrets of the Governor's Son
Something was definitely wrong.
Theo shook his head slowly. "I'm not involved in anything dangerous. But someone is trying to make it look like I am."
"Who?" Governor Mitchell demanded.
Hours passed in a blur of phone calls and paperwork.
"I don't know yet," Theo admitted. "But I'm going to find out."
The office buzzed with energy, but I felt disconnected from it all.
"You'd better," the governor said coldly. "Because if this gets out..."
My thoughts were consumed by Theo and whatever trouble he might be in.
When the office finally began to empty out for the day, I saw my chance.
"It won't," Theo interrupted. "I'll make sure of it."
Governor Mitchell stared at him for a long moment before finally nodding. "Fine. But if you screw this up..."
I slipped away from my desk and made my way to the governor's office.
The door was closed now, but I could see light seeping out from under it.
"I won't," Theo said firmly.
I took a deep breath and turned the knob slowly.
The governor turned to leave but paused at the door. "And clean up this mess," he added before walking out.
As soon as he was gone, I rushed over to Theo. "Are you okay?"
Inside, the room was dimly lit, papers strewn across the desk and floor.
My eyes were drawn to a folder labeled "Theo - Confidential."
He nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. "Yeah. Thanks for standing up for me."
I hesitated for a moment before reaching for it.
"Of course," I said softly. "We're in this together."
He managed a small smile before bending down to pick up the pieces of the broken vase.
Secrets of the Governor's Son
I knelt beside him, helping him gather the shards.
"We'll figure this out," I said quietly.
"I know we will," he replied.
Just then, footsteps echoed down the hallway again.
We both looked up as someone approached the office door.
My hands trembled as I flipped through the photos inside the folder.
Each image showed Theo in compromising situations, surrounded by drugs and unsavory characters.
My heart raced, pounding so loudly I was sure someone would hear it.
Secrets of the Governor's Son
I had to know what this meant for Theo, but first, I needed to get out of here.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, growing louder with each step.
I quickly shoved the folder back into its place and closed it, my fingers fumbling in my haste.
The door creaked open just as I turned around.
Governor Mitchell stepped in, his eyes narrowing when he saw me.
"What are you doing here?" he demanded, his voice sharp and suspicious.
"I-I was just looking for some campaign materials," I stammered, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I thought they might be in here."
He didn't seem convinced, his gaze piercing through me like a laser.
"These are restricted areas," he said coldly.
"You shouldn't be in here without permission."
"I'm sorry," I mumbled, lowering my head.
"I'll go now."
Secrets of the Governor's Son
He stepped aside, still watching me closely as I hurried past him and out of the office.
As soon as I was out of sight, I leaned against the wall, trying to catch my breath.
I knew I had to confront Theo about what I'd seen.
The next morning, I found Theo in the break room, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"Hey," I said, trying to sound casual as I approached him.
He looked up and smiled. "Nova! How's it going?"
"We need to talk," I said quietly, glancing around to make sure no one else was listening.
His smile faded as he set down his cup. "What's wrong?"
"Not here," I whispered urgently. "Let's go somewhere private."
We made our way to an empty conference room and closed the door behind us.
Theo looked worried now, his brow furrowed in concern.
"What's going on?" he asked.
I took a deep breath and met his eyes. "I found something yesterday...in your dad's office."
His expression shifted from concern to confusion. "What do you mean?"
"I saw photos of you," I said softly. "With drugs and some really shady people."
Secrets of the Governor's Son
Theo's face went pale, and he took a step back. "You weren't supposed to see those."
"What is this about?" I pressed, my voice rising with frustration. "Are you involved in something dangerous?"
"It's not what you think," he said quickly, shaking his head. "It's complicated."
"Then explain it to me!" I demanded. "I need to know what's going on."
Theo ran a hand through his hair, looking torn. "It's...it's a setup," he finally admitted. "Someone's trying to frame me."
"Who?" I asked, my mind racing with possibilities.
"I don't know yet," he said grimly. "But I'm working on finding out."
"We have to tell your dad," I insisted.
"No!" Theo snapped, surprising me with the intensity of his reaction. "We can't involve him until we have proof."
"But—"
"Trust me, Nova," he pleaded, his eyes desperate. "I'll handle this."
I wanted to argue, but the look on his face stopped me.
"Fine," I said reluctantly. "But I'm not letting you do this alone."
He managed a small smile at that. "Thanks."
Just then, the door burst open and Governor Mitchell stormed in.
