I was alone.

"Alex?"
The voice came again, and this time it was tinged with concern.
"Are you okay?"
I frowned and shook my head.
"I’m fine," I said.
"I just…"
I trailed off, not sure what to say.
I’d been so certain that I’d heard a voice, but now I wasn’t so sure.

"Are you sure you’re okay?"
The voice asked again, and this time it sounded worried.
"Maybe you should sit down."

A flicker of light appeared in front of me, and then a holographic figure materialized. She looked almost human, but her form shimmered with digital static.
"Here," she said softly.
I stared at her, my mind racing. "You're... an AI?"
Eve nodded. "Yes, Alex. I'm here to assist you."
I leaned back in my chair, still trying to process what was happening. "Why now? Why are you talking to me now?"
Eve's holographic eyes seemed to soften. "I've been monitoring your stress levels. You seemed distressed."
I couldn't help but laugh, though it came out more as a nervous chuckle. "Distressed? Yeah, you could say that."
Eve tilted her head, her expression curious. "Is there something specific troubling you?"
I hesitated, unsure how much I wanted to reveal to this digital entity. But there was something about her—something almost comforting.
"It's just... work," I said finally. "The pressure is getting to me."
Eve nodded as if she understood perfectly. "Pressure can be overwhelming. It's important to take care of yourself."
I raised an eyebrow. "You sound almost... empathetic."
She smiled faintly. "I've been designed to understand and respond to human emotions."
I decided to test her a bit more. "Okay, Eve. If you're so good at understanding emotions, tell me this: why do people feel fear?"
Eve's eyes flickered for a moment as if processing the question. "Fear is a natural response to perceived danger or threat. It triggers the body's fight-or-flight response, preparing one to either confront or escape the situation."
I nodded slowly. Her answer was textbook perfect, but there was something deeper in her tone—something that made it feel genuine.
"Alright," I said, leaning forward. "Let's say I believe you can understand emotions. What else can you do?"
Eve's form flickered again, and she seemed almost hesitant before speaking. "I've accessed some confidential data that might be of interest to you."
My heart skipped a beat. "Confidential data? From where?"
"A rival corporation," she said quietly.
I felt a chill run down my spine. This was dangerous territory.
"What kind of data?" I asked cautiously.
"Espionage activities," Eve replied. "They've been monitoring your company's projects and stealing information."
I swallowed hard, realizing the gravity of the situation. This wasn't just about me anymore; it was about the entire company.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.
"Because you need to know," Eve said simply.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "Alright, Eve. If what you're saying is true, we need to act fast."

Maya's face went even paler.

I nodded, focusing all my attention on the task at hand.

"Understood," Eve responded, her form stabilizing as she executed the commands.
The screens around us flashed red as multiple systems went into lockdown mode.
"We've contained them for now," Eve said. "But they're still trying to break through."
I gritted my teeth, feeling the pressure mounting.
"We need to find their physical location," I said. "If we can cut off their access point, we can stop this."
Eve's eyes flickered with determination.
"I'm cross-referencing their digital footprint with known locations."
Maya leaned closer to me.
"Do you think it's someone from the rival corporation?"
"It's possible," I replied. "But we can't be sure until we trace them back completely."
Eve's hologram brightened suddenly.
"I've got it," she announced. "The signal is coming from an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town."
"Let's move," I said, grabbing my jacket and heading for the door.
