"You’ve got this, Daisy. Just relax."
Mason’s voice is as laid back as ever, but when he glances over at me, I can see the tension in his neck.
He knows as well as I do that this isn’t going to work.
Not unless we can get Daisy to relax.
I turn my attention back to her and take a deep breath.
"Listen, I know you’re nervous. We all are when we come here. But you’re not alone. We’re here to help you and your dog. You’ve made the first step just showing up. Now let’s make the best of it and see what we can do."
I pause and wait for her to process.
She’s clearly anxious, but she’s here for a reason.
"I want to believe that," she says slowly.
"Really, I do. I just don’t know if I can do this."
"Let’s take it one step at a time," I say.
"One day at a time. And let’s start right now. Are you ready?"
I ask slowly, giving her time to think about it.
She swallows hard but nods.
"Yes."
"Okay, then let’s get started."
I turn and walk over to the side of the training ring.
Mason follows me slowly and Hudson falls in line behind him.
We form a semi-circle facing Daisy and wait for her to follow us.
She hesitates for just a second before she moves forward.
"Good," I say slowly.
"Now stop right there."
She freezes right where she is and looks at me nervously.
