I was in love with my best friend.
It wasn’t a secret I was eager to share, not with anyone, not even with him.
In fact, I’d never acted on those feelings in any way.
I didn’t plan to.
Or maybe I just hadn’t found the right way.
Or the right time.
Because I didn’t plan to hide them forever either.
I was patient and willing to wait until it was right.
Until he was ready, which might be never, but I was okay with that.
I’d learned to live with that secret, to keep it hidden deep inside of me.
I’d gotten used to the way my heart raced whenever he was close, to the fluttering in my chest, to the need that always pulled at me whenever we were in the same room.
I’d also learned to ignore all of it.
It wasn’t easy, but I managed and had managed for years now.
I’d made my peace with it too and focused on what mattered.
What mattered was that we were friends.
We had been for a long time and that wasn’t going to change anytime soon.
That wasn’t going to change at all.
He needed me and I was there for him.
