When I was little, I used to imagine my parents as superheroes who had died saving the world from certain doom.
I imagined that they had been on a mission and had been killed by an evil villain, and that I was their secret daughter.
I imagined that they had left me at the orphanage to keep me safe, and that one day they would come back for me.
I used to imagine a lot of things about my parents.
Sometimes they were movie stars who had given me up for adoption to protect me from the paparazzi.
Sometimes they were wizards who had sent me to the non-magical world (the "Mundane" world, as I later learned) to keep me safe while they fought in a war.
Sometimes they were aliens who had been called back to their home planet and had left me behind by mistake.
Of course, none of these fantasies were true.
My parents were probably ordinary people who had died in a car crash or something.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
I stared at the photo of my parents, their faces frozen in time, smiling back at me from a world I would never know.
A pang of sadness twisted in my chest.
I wished I could remember them, even just a little bit.
But all I had were these daydreams and this single photograph.
The door to my dorm room burst open, jolting me out of my reverie.
"Kath!" Marcus's voice was breathless, his eyes wide with excitement.
I quickly shoved the photo under my pillow and turned to face him.
"What's up, Marcus?"
"You won't believe this," he said, leaning against the doorframe.
"We have a new teacher."
I raised an eyebrow.
"So? We get new teachers all the time."
"No, no," he shook his head vigorously.
"This one's different. Her name's Elara Voss, and she's... well, she's been watching us."
"Watching us?" I echoed, intrigued despite myself.
"What do you mean?"
Marcus stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.
"I mean, she seems to be paying extra attention to us. To you, especially."
I frowned.
"Why would she do that?"
"I don't know," Marcus admitted.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
"But I've seen her looking at you during classes. It's like she's studying you or something."
A shiver ran down my spine.
This was definitely unusual.
"Where is she now?" I asked.
"In the library," Marcus replied.
"I saw her there just before I came here."
I grabbed my jacket from the back of my chair and slipped it on.
"Let's go check it out."
Marcus grinned.
"I knew you'd say that."
We hurried down the corridor, our footsteps echoing off the stone walls.
The library was on the other side of the campus, but we made it there in record time.
As we approached the entrance, I slowed down and motioned for Marcus to be quiet.
We peeked through the doorway and saw her immediately.
Elara Voss was standing by one of the bookshelves, her back to us.
She had long, dark hair that cascaded down her back in waves and wore a flowing black dress that made her look like she had stepped out of another era.
"That's her," Marcus whispered.
I nodded and took a deep breath before stepping into the library.
"Excuse me," I called out.
Elara turned around slowly, her piercing blue eyes locking onto mine.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
For a moment, I felt like I couldn't move, like those eyes were holding me in place.
"Yes?" she said in a calm, almost melodic voice.
"I'm Kathleen Thompson," I said, trying to sound confident.
"I've heard you're new here."
Her lips curved into a small smile.
"Yes, that's correct. I'm Elara Voss."
There was something about her smile that sent another shiver down my spine.
"What are you doing here?" I asked bluntly.
Elara's smile widened slightly.
"I'm just familiarizing myself with the school's resources."
I didn't believe her for a second.
"And why have you been watching me?" I demanded.
Her expression didn't change, but there was a flicker of something in her eyes—surprise? Amusement?
"I'm not sure what you mean," she said smoothly.
Before I could press further, Marcus tugged on my sleeve.
"Kath," he whispered urgently.
I turned to see what had him so agitated and froze.
Standing at the entrance of the library were two men in dark suits, their faces obscured by shadows.
They were staring directly at us.
"We need to go," Marcus said urgently.
But before we could move, one of the men stepped forward and spoke in a low, menacing voice.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
"Kathleen Thompson, you need to come with us," the man said, his voice sending chills down my spine.
I glanced at Marcus, who looked as terrified as I felt.
Elara stepped forward, placing herself between us and the men.
"Leave now," she commanded, her voice suddenly filled with authority.
The men hesitated, exchanging glances.
"You have no jurisdiction here," one of them finally said, his tone defiant.
Elara's eyes narrowed, and she raised her hand.
A soft glow emanated from her palm, illuminating the dim library.
"I said leave," she repeated, her voice echoing with an otherworldly power.
The men took a step back, clearly unnerved by the display of magic.
After a tense moment, they turned and disappeared into the shadows without another word.
I let out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding and turned to Elara.
"What just happened?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly.
Elara lowered her hand, the glow fading away.
"We don't have much time," she said urgently. "Those men are agents of the dark forces. They were here to capture you."
"Capture me?" I echoed in disbelief. "Why?"
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
Elara took a deep breath, her expression softening slightly. "Because you are not just any ordinary girl, Kathleen. Your parents were powerful magical beings who went missing on a mission. You have inherited their abilities."
My mind reeled at her words. "My parents... magical beings? But that's impossible!"
"It's true," Elara insisted. "They sent you to the Mundane world to keep you safe while they fought in a war against these dark forces. But now that they are missing, it's up to you to continue their legacy."
I shook my head, trying to process everything. "But why me? I'm just... me."
Elara placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You have great potential, Kath. And I have been sent here to prepare you for your destiny."
Marcus finally found his voice. "So all this time... you've been watching over her?"
Elara nodded. "Yes. It was my duty to ensure her safety until she was ready."
I looked at Elara, then at Marcus, feeling a mix of fear and excitement bubbling inside me. "What do we do now?"
"We need to get you somewhere safe," Elara said firmly. "And start your training immediately."
"Training?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
"Yes," Elara replied. "You need to learn how to harness your powers if you're going to stand a chance against the dark forces."
I took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay. Let's do this."
Elara smiled warmly. "Good. Follow me."
She led us out of the library and into the night, the cool air brushing against my skin.
As we walked through the campus grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of determination growing within me.
For years, I had wondered about my parents and where I came from.
Now I had answers—and a purpose.
We reached a secluded area near the edge of the campus where Elara stopped and turned to face us.
"This is where your journey begins," she said softly.
I looked around at the darkened trees and the moonlit sky above us.
It felt surreal, like something out of one of my childhood fantasies.
But this was real—more real than anything I'd ever known.
"Are you ready?" Elara asked, her eyes locking onto mine once more.
I swallowed hard and nodded. "Yes."
Before anything else could be said or done, a sudden rustling in the bushes caught our attention.
We all turned towards the sound just as a figure emerged from the shadows—another agent of the dark forces.
He lunged at us with blinding speed.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
I barely had time to react before the agent was upon us.
Marcus, however, was quicker.
He threw himself in front of me and Elara, blocking the agent's path with his body.
"Get back!" Marcus shouted, his voice filled with determination.
The agent snarled and swung a fist at Marcus, who dodged just in time.
Elara raised her hand again, her palm glowing with that same soft light from earlier.
The agent hesitated for a split second, but it was enough for Marcus to land a punch squarely on his jaw.
"Kath, stay behind me!" Marcus yelled as he grappled with the agent.
I watched in horror as they struggled, their movements a blur of fists and kicks.
Elara stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the agent.
A faint shimmer surrounded him, and he began to slow down, his movements becoming sluggish.
"He's weakening," Elara said through gritted teeth.
"Kath, you have to help!"
"Help? How?" I shouted back, panic rising in my chest.
"Focus on your hands," Elara instructed.
"Feel the energy inside you. You can do this!"
I took a deep breath and tried to concentrate.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
I closed my eyes and imagined the same glow that emanated from Elara's hands coming from mine.
At first, nothing happened.
But then I felt a warmth spreading through my palms.
When I opened my eyes, I saw a faint light flickering around my hands.
"That's it!" Elara encouraged.
"Now direct it towards the agent!"
I aimed my glowing hands at the agent and willed the energy towards him.
To my amazement, a beam of light shot out and struck him in the chest.
He staggered back, his face contorted in pain.
Marcus took advantage of the momentary distraction and landed another powerful blow that sent the agent crashing to the ground.
He didn't get up.
"We did it," I whispered in disbelief.
Elara nodded, but her expression remained serious.
"This is just the beginning. More agents will be coming."
As if on cue, we heard distant footsteps approaching rapidly.
Elara turned to me and Marcus.
"We need to move now."
"But where are we going?" I asked urgently.
Elara glanced around before fixing her gaze on a path leading into the woods.
"There is a place where you can learn more about your parents and their mission. It's not far from here."
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
Marcus looked at me, his eyes filled with concern.
"Are you sure about this, Kath?"
I nodded firmly.
"I need to know the truth."
Elara led us into the dense forest, our footsteps crunching on fallen leaves and twigs.
The moonlight filtered through the canopy above, casting eerie shadows on the ground.
We moved quickly but cautiously, aware that more agents could be lurking nearby.
After what felt like an eternity of navigating through the woods, we arrived at a small clearing.
In the center stood an ancient stone structure covered in moss and vines.
It looked like something out of an old legend.
"This is it," Elara said quietly.
"The answers you seek are inside."
I took a deep breath and stepped forward, feeling a mix of anticipation and fear.
As I reached for the door handle, another rustling sound came from behind us.
We spun around just in time to see several dark figures emerging from the trees—more agents closing in fast.
"Inside! Now!" Elara commanded.
I yanked open the door and we rushed inside just as the agents reached the clearing.
The heavy door slammed shut behind us with a resounding thud.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
The interior of the ancient stone structure was dimly lit by glowing runes etched into the walls.
The air was thick with a musty scent, and the temperature dropped noticeably.
We found ourselves in a large chamber filled with mysterious artifacts—old scrolls, strange crystals, and peculiar instruments that hummed softly.
I took a moment to catch my breath, my heart still pounding from the recent encounter.
Elara turned to face us, her expression serious.
"This place is a sanctuary," she began, her voice echoing slightly in the cavernous room.
"It was built by your parents and their allies as a safe haven and a repository of knowledge."
I glanced around, trying to take it all in.
"Why did they build it?" I asked.
"And what does it have to do with my parents' disappearance?"
Elara walked over to a pedestal in the center of the room and placed her hand on it.
The runes on the pedestal glowed brighter, casting a soft light across her face.
"Your parents were part of an ancient order dedicated to protecting our world from dark forces," she explained.
"They discovered something—a powerful artifact—that could tip the balance in favor of evil if it fell into the wrong hands."
She paused, her eyes meeting mine.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
"They went missing while trying to secure this artifact. This place holds clues to their mission and possibly their whereabouts."
Before I could ask more questions, a loud thud echoed through the chamber.
The agents outside were trying to break in.
Panic surged through me as I looked at Elara.
"What do we do?"
Elara's eyes narrowed with determination.
"We need to reinforce the defenses. Kath, you have to use your powers."
I felt a wave of fear and doubt wash over me.
"I don't know how," I admitted, my voice trembling.
Elara stepped closer and placed her hands on my shoulders.
"You can do this," she said firmly.
"Focus on the energy within you. The runes will guide you."
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to calm my racing thoughts.
I focused on the warmth I had felt earlier in my palms, willing it to return.
Slowly, I felt the familiar sensation spreading through my hands again.
"Now, direct that energy towards the walls," Elara instructed.
I opened my eyes and raised my glowing hands towards the runes on the walls.
As I concentrated, beams of light shot out from my palms and connected with the runes.
The entire chamber seemed to hum with power as the runes pulsed brighter.
The thudding outside grew louder and more frantic, but I could feel the structure's defenses strengthening under my influence.
Magic's Awakening: The Orphan's Quest
Marcus watched in awe as I continued to channel my energy into the walls.
"You’re doing it, Kath!" he exclaimed.
Just then, a section of the wall cracked under the pressure from outside.
A dark figure began to force its way through.
"No!" I shouted, pouring more energy into reinforcing that area.
The crack sealed itself just as quickly as it had appeared, pushing back the intruder.
Elara nodded approvingly.
"Good work. Keep going."
Sweat trickled down my forehead as I pushed myself harder than ever before.
Every ounce of energy I had was focused on maintaining our sanctuary’s defenses.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity but was likely only minutes, the pounding stopped.
The agents outside seemed to retreat for now.
I collapsed onto my knees, exhausted but relieved.
"We did it," I panted.
Elara helped me up and gave me an encouraging smile.
"You did well, Kath. But this is just one battle. There will be more."
Marcus came over and put a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"We'll face them together."
I nodded, feeling a renewed sense of determination despite my fatigue.
"What's next?"
Elara gestured towards another door at the far end of the chamber.
"Now we delve deeper into this place and uncover the secrets your parents left behind."
