I believe in love.
Not just any kind of love, but the real kind.
The kind that makes you feel whole.
The kind that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world.
The kind that makes you feel like you’re invincible.
The kind that makes you feel like you can conquer anything and everything.
I know it’s out there.
I know it exists.
I’ve seen it with my own eyes, and I’ve felt it with my entire being.
It’s a beautiful thing, and I want it for myself.
I want to experience it for myself.
I want to be loved by someone who loves me just as much as I love them.
Someone who will move mountains for me.
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
But right now, I’m sitting in a dimly lit café, nervously stirring my coffee.
My eyes dart to the door every few seconds.
Elena, sitting across from me, notices and sighs.
"He's not coming, Ash," she says softly.
I force a smile, though my heart sinks.
"He'll come," I whisper, more to myself than to her.
Elena shakes her head slightly but doesn't say anything more.
The minutes tick by slowly, each one feeling like an eternity.
Just when I'm about to give up hope, the door swings open.
Dominic enters, his presence commanding the room.
He strides over to our table and sits beside me without a word.
His face is expressionless, his eyes cold.
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
"Dominic," I say, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm so glad you came."
He doesn't respond, just stares at me with those icy eyes.
I try to engage him in conversation, asking about his day, his work, anything to break the silence.
But he remains silent, his gaze never wavering.
Frustrated tears well up in my eyes.
I reach for his hand, but he pulls away sharply.
Elena watches us, her worry etched clearly on her face.
"Dominic," I plead softly. "Please talk to me."
He finally speaks, his voice low and devoid of emotion. "There's nothing to talk about."
"But there is," I insist. "We need to talk about us."
"There is no 'us'," he says flatly. "Not anymore."
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
The words hit me like a punch to the gut.
I struggle to breathe, my vision blurring with tears.
Elena reaches out and touches my arm gently. "Ash..."
I shake my head, trying to hold back the sobs threatening to escape.
"Why?" I manage to choke out. "Why are you doing this?"
Dominic stands up abruptly. "This was a mistake," he mutters before turning and walking away.
I watch him go, my heart shattering into a million pieces.
Elena moves to sit beside me, wrapping her arms around me as I finally break down in tears.
"It's going to be okay," she whispers soothingly. "I'm here for you."
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
"No," I say, my voice stronger than I expected. "I need answers."
Elena looks at me with concern. "Ashley, maybe you should give it some time."
I shake my head firmly. "No, I can't wait. I need to know why he's pushing me away."
I stand up abruptly, almost knocking over my coffee cup.
Elena reaches out to steady it, her eyes wide with worry. "Be careful!"
But I'm already moving towards the door, my heart pounding in my chest.
The cool evening air hits my face as I step outside.
I scan the street quickly and spot Dominic walking briskly down the sidewalk.
Without thinking, I start to follow him, my footsteps quickening to match his pace.
He turns into a dimly lit alleyway, and I hesitate for a moment.
The shadows seem to swallow him up, making him look like a ghost disappearing into the night.
But I can't stop now.
Taking a deep breath, I plunge into the alley after him.
"Dominic!" I call out, my voice trembling but loud enough to echo off the brick walls.
He stops abruptly and turns around slowly.
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
His eyes are cold as ever, but there's a flicker of something else—something I can't quite place.
"Why are you following me?" he asks harshly.
I take a step closer, my hands clenched into fists at my sides. "I need to know why you're doing this. Why are you pushing me away?"
Dominic's jaw tightens, and he clenches his fists so hard that his knuckles turn white.
For a moment, he looks like he's struggling with himself, battling some inner turmoil.
Then he steps closer to me, his face inches from mine.
"It's for your own safety," he whispers harshly.
His breath is warm against my skin, but his words send a chill down my spine.
"What do you mean?" I demand, refusing to back down. "What are you talking about?"
He shakes his head slightly, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and pain. "You don't understand. You can't understand."
"Then make me understand!" I shout, my voice echoing through the narrow alleyway.
Dominic takes another step closer until our faces are almost touching.
"You have no idea what you're getting yourself into," he says quietly but intensely. "If you stay with me, you'll be in danger. Real danger."
I stare at him, trying to process his words. "Danger from what? From who?"
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
He doesn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looks away for a moment as if gathering his thoughts.
When he finally speaks again, his voice is barely above a whisper. "From people who want to hurt me—and anyone close to me."
My heart races even faster as I try to comprehend what he's saying.
"But we can face it together," I insist desperately. "We can figure it out."
Dominic shakes his head again, more forcefully this time. "No, Ashley. You don't get it. This isn't something we can just 'figure out.' It's serious."
"But—"
"No buts," he interrupts sharply. "This is how it has to be."
I feel tears welling up in my eyes again, but I blink them back furiously.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I ask softly.
He sighs deeply and runs a hand through his hair. "Because I thought I could protect you without involving you in all this mess."
"And now?" I press on.
"Now... now it's too late," he says bitterly.
Before I can respond or ask any more questions, Dominic turns on his heel and starts walking away again.
This time, though, he doesn't look back.
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
I wipe my tears and follow him further into the alley.
My heart pounds as I catch up to him.
"I'm not afraid," I declare, voice steady.
Dominic stops, his back still turned.
"You don't understand," he mutters, fists clenched.
I step closer, placing a hand on his arm.
"I do understand," I insist.
Dominic spins around, eyes blazing with a mix of anger and desperation.
"This isn't a game, Ashley!" he snaps.
I stand firm, refusing to back down.
"Neither is love," I reply softly.
He stares at me, his expression hardening.
"You think love can save us? Save you?" he asks bitterly.
"I think it can help us face whatever comes our way," I say, my voice unwavering.
Dominic shakes his head, frustration evident in every line of his body.
"You don't know what you're talking about. You don't know what I've done."
"Then tell me," I urge. "Let me in. Let me help."
He looks away, jaw tight.
"It's not that simple."
"It is," I counter. "You just have to trust me."
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
Dominic's eyes meet mine again, filled with a storm of emotions.
"Trust isn't something I can afford right now."
"Then let me earn it," I plead. "Just give me a chance."
He takes a deep breath, running a hand through his hair.
"I can't drag you into this darkness with me."
"I'm already here," I point out. "And I'm not going anywhere."
For a moment, he looks like he's about to argue, but then he sighs deeply.
"Ashley... if you stay with me, you'll be putting your life at risk."
"I'd rather risk my life than lose you," I say firmly.
Dominic's shoulders slump slightly as if the weight of the world is pressing down on him.
"I don't want to lose you either," he admits quietly.
"Then stop pushing me away," I whisper. "Let me stand by your side."
He hesitates, torn between his fears and his feelings for me.
Finally, he nods slowly.
"Alright. But you need to know what you're getting into."
"I'm ready," I assure him.
Dominic takes my hand and leads me deeper into the alley.
We walk in silence for a few moments until we reach a hidden door behind a stack of crates.
Thawing the Mafia's Heart
He pushes it open and gestures for me to enter.
Inside, the room is dimly lit by a single flickering bulb hanging from the ceiling.
The walls are lined with maps and photographs, some marked with red circles and lines connecting them like a web of secrets.
"This is where I've been working from," Dominic explains. "Trying to stay one step ahead of them."
I look around, taking in the chaotic yet organized space.
"Who are they?" I ask quietly.
"A group called The Shadows," he says grimly. "They've been after me for years."
"And now they're after anyone close to you," I conclude.
He nods. "That's why I tried to push you away. To keep you safe."
"But we're stronger together," I remind him. "We can fight this."
Dominic squeezes my hand gently.
"I hope you're right."
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoes from outside the door.
Dominic's grip tightens on my hand as we both turn towards the entrance.
The door bursts open and three figures clad in black rush in, weapons drawn.
"Get down!" Dominic shouts, pulling me behind a table for cover.
