I was in love with my best friend.
No, not that one.
The other one.
No, not that one either.
I was in love with both of them.
And I was pretty sure they were in love with me too.
But I had no idea what to do about it.
"Emily, are you listening to me?"
Sarah asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I looked up from the menu and saw her giving me a knowing look.
"What? Of course I’m listening."
"No, you’re not. You’re thinking about Alex again."
I blushed and looked down at my menu.
We were sitting at a table outside a small café in the center of town, waiting for our other best friend to arrive.
I’d been looking forward to this all week, but now that it was actually happening, I couldn’t concentrate on anything else but Alex.
"I am not," I said, even though we both knew it was a lie.
"Okay, fine. I am. But can you blame me? He’s been acting so weird lately."
Sarah rolled her eyes and took a sip of her iced tea.
"He has not been acting weird. You’re just obsessed with him."
"I am not obsessed with him," I said, even though we both knew that was a lie too.
Sarah smirked and leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Sure, Emily. Whatever you say."
I sighed and put the menu down, giving up the pretense of choosing something to eat.
"Seriously, Sarah. Haven't you noticed how distant he's been? Like, he's hiding something."
Sarah raised an eyebrow.
"Maybe he's just busy. Not everything is about you, you know."
I frowned, feeling a pang of guilt.
"I know that. It's just... I can't shake this feeling that something's off."
Sarah reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
"Look, Em. Alex is probably fine. You're just overthinking things because you like him."
I pulled my hand away and stared at the table, my mind racing.
It wasn't just that I liked Alex; it was that I liked Sarah too.
And the thought of losing either of them terrified me.
Before I could say anything else, Sarah's eyes widened as she looked past me.
"Speak of the devil," she said with a grin.
My heart skipped a beat as I turned around and saw Alex walking towards us.
He looked as handsome as hell, his dark hair tousled by the breeze and a smile playing on his lips.
But there was something in his eyes that made my stomach twist with anxiety.
"Hey, guys," he said as he reached our table.
I forced a smile and tried to ignore the way my heart was pounding in my chest.
"Hey, Alex. How's it going?"
He shrugged and pulled out a chair, sitting down next to me.
"Not bad. Just busy with work stuff."
Sarah rolled her eyes again and nudged me under the table.
"Told you," she whispered.
I ignored her and focused on Alex, trying to read his expression.
"So, what have you been up to?" I asked, hoping to get some answers.
Alex hesitated for a moment before answering.
"Oh, you know. The usual. Just trying to keep up with everything."
His vague response only made me more suspicious.
I glanced at Sarah, who was watching us with an amused look on her face.
"Well, we're glad you could make it," she said cheerfully. "Emily here was starting to think you'd forgotten about us."
Alex chuckled and shook his head.
"Never. You guys are my best friends."
The words stung more than they should have, considering how much I wanted them to be true in a different way.
I took a deep breath and tried to push my feelings aside for the moment.
"So, what do you want to order?" I asked, picking up the menu again in an attempt to distract myself.
As we discussed our options and placed our orders, I couldn't help but steal glances at Alex every now and then.
There was definitely something he wasn't telling us, and it was driving me crazy not knowing what it was.
After a while, our food arrived, and we settled into a comfortable conversation about everything and nothing at all.
But even as we laughed and joked around like old times, I couldn't shake the feeling that something big was about to happen—something that would change everything between us forever.
Just as I was starting to relax a little, Alex's phone buzzed on the table beside him.
He glanced at the screen and his expression darkened instantly.
He shoved the phone into his pocket and forced a smile, but I could see the strain in his eyes.
"Everything okay?" I asked, trying to keep my voice casual.
"Yeah, just work stuff," he replied, but his tone was off.
Sarah, sensing the tension, tried to lighten the mood with a joke.
"So, did you hear about the mathematician who's afraid of negative numbers? He'll stop at nothing to avoid them!"
Alex's laugh was hollow, and it made my heart race even more.
I wanted to ask what was wrong, but I feared the answer.
The silence stretched between us, heavy and uncomfortable.
I could feel my palms getting sweaty as I waited for someone to break it.
Finally, Alex spoke, his voice low and distant.
"I need to tell you both something."
My stomach churned as I braced for his next words.
My mind raced with possibilities—none of them good.
Sarah leaned forward, her expression serious now.
"What is it, Alex?"
He took a deep breath and looked down at his hands.
"I got a job offer. It's in another city. I have to move."
The words hit me like a punch to the gut.
I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me.
"When?" I managed to ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"In two weeks," he said quietly.
Sarah's eyes widened in shock.
"Two weeks? That's so soon!"
Alex nodded, looking miserable.
"I know. I didn't want to tell you guys until I was sure. But now it's official."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Alex was leaving?
Just like that?
"What about us?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.
He looked at me with a pained expression.
"We'll still be friends. We'll keep in touch."
But we all knew it wouldn't be the same.
The dynamic between us would change forever.
Sarah reached out and put a hand on Alex's arm.
"We're happy for you, Alex. Really. It's just...a lot to take in."
He nodded again, looking grateful for her understanding.
"I know. I'm sorry for springing this on you guys."
I felt tears prickling at the corners of my eyes but blinked them away.
I couldn't fall apart now—not in front of them.
"So, where are you moving?" Sarah asked, trying to keep the conversation going.
"San Francisco," Alex replied. "It's a great opportunity. I couldn't pass it up."
San Francisco felt like a world away from our small town.
I couldn't imagine not seeing Alex every day.
We sat there in silence for a few moments, each lost in our own thoughts.
The café around us buzzed with activity—people chatting, cups clinking—but it all felt distant and surreal.
Finally, Sarah broke the silence again.
"Well, we should celebrate then. This is a big deal!"
Alex smiled weakly.
"Yeah, maybe we should."
But none of us felt much like celebrating.
As we finished our meal and prepared to leave, I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was changing too fast.
I wanted to hold onto this moment—to freeze time and keep things just as they were—but I knew that wasn't possible.
We walked out of the café together, the sun setting behind us and casting long shadows on the pavement.
Alex turned to me and Sarah with a sad smile.
"Thanks for being here today. It means a lot."
We nodded, not trusting ourselves to speak without breaking down.
As we parted ways and headed home, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for us—for me and Sarah without Alex by our side.
The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving a warm glow in its wake.
Streetlights flickered on, casting a soft light over the quiet streets.
I knew I couldn't let this moment slip away.
"Alex, can we talk?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Sarah glanced at me with a knowing look but stepped away without a word.
Alex looked surprised but nodded.
"Sure, Em," he said, his tone gentle.
We moved a few steps away from Sarah, who pretended to be interested in a nearby shop window.
I took a deep breath, feeling my hands tremble.
"I need to tell you something important," I began, my voice shaky.
Alex's eyes widened with concern.
"What is it, Em?" he asked softly.
I looked into his eyes, feeling vulnerable yet determined.
"I have feelings for you," I confessed, my heart pounding in my chest.
For a moment, there was only silence between us.
Alex's expression shifted from surprise to something unreadable.
He opened his mouth to speak but then closed it again, as if searching for the right words.
"Emily," he finally said, his voice filled with emotion. "I... I don't know what to say."
I felt tears welling up in my eyes but blinked them away.
"I just needed you to know before you left. I couldn't keep it inside any longer."
Alex reached out and gently took my hand in his.
"Em, I'm so sorry. This is all so sudden. I never realized..."
His words trailed off, and I could see the conflict in his eyes.
He squeezed my hand reassuringly.
"I care about you so much. But with everything happening right now... it's complicated."
I nodded, understanding the weight of his words but feeling crushed all the same.
"I get it. I just couldn't let you leave without telling you how I feel."
Alex pulled me into a hug, and I buried my face in his shoulder, trying to hold back the sobs threatening to escape.
We stood there for what felt like an eternity, wrapped in each other's arms.
When we finally pulled apart, Alex looked at me with a mixture of sadness and affection.
"I'm going to miss you so much," he said softly.
"Me too," I replied, my voice barely audible.
Sarah approached us then, her expression sympathetic but curious.
"Everything okay?" she asked gently.
I forced a smile and nodded.
"Yeah. Just needed to clear the air."
Alex gave Sarah a small smile as well.
"We should probably head home," he said. "It's getting late."
We walked together in silence for a while, the tension between us palpable but unspoken.
As we neared our respective homes, Alex turned to us one last time.
"Thank you both for being such amazing friends. No matter where I go, I'll always cherish our time together."
Sarah and I nodded, each of us fighting our own emotions.
With one final hug, Alex turned and walked away into the night.
Sarah and I stood there for a moment longer before she spoke up.
"You did the right thing, Em. I'm proud of you."
I smiled weakly at her words but felt an ache deep in my chest that wouldn't go away.
We parted ways and headed home separately.
