Chapter 1
I can’t believe I’m doing this.
I should be at home, in bed, watching Netflix and eating ice cream.
Instead, I’m sitting in the back of a taxi on my way to an engagement dinner with a man I don’t love.
And I never will.
My parents are forcing me into this marriage, and I’m not sure how much longer I can take it.
I need to get out of this car and run away as fast as I can.
I should have known better than to agree to this dinner.
But my sister Sarah convinced me that it would be good for me to get out of the house and see people.
She said that maybe if I gave him a chance, I would learn to love him.
But she was wrong.
I don’t even like him.
And he doesn’t like me either.
He’s only marrying me because his family has money, and they want to merge their companies together.
It’s all business to him, and it’s all business to my parents too.
The taxi pulls up to the restaurant, and my heart pounds in my chest like a drum.
I pay the driver and step out, my legs feeling like jelly.
The restaurant is one of those fancy places with a valet and a maître d' who looks like he’s judging you the moment you walk in.
I take a deep breath and push open the door, the smell of expensive food hitting me instantly.
There they are—my parents, sitting at a table near the window, and next to them, Mr. Cold Businessman himself.
His name is Richard, but I call him Dick in my head.
He’s staring at his phone, probably checking stock prices or something equally boring.
My mother spots me first and waves me over with that forced smile she always wears when she’s trying to impress someone.
“Emily, darling! Over here!” she calls out.
I force a smile and walk over, every step feeling like I’m walking towards my doom.
“Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady.
Richard looks up from his phone and gives me a curt nod. “Emily.”
I can’t do this.
Golden Cage
Panic surges through me like a tidal wave.
Before I know it, I’m turning on my heel and bolting out the door.
“Emily!” I hear my mother shout behind me, but I don’t stop.
I run down the street, my heels clicking loudly on the pavement.
I have no idea where I’m going; I just need to get away.
Suddenly, a motorcycle screeches to a halt inches from me.
I freeze, my heart hammering in my chest.
The rider pulls off his helmet, revealing messy brown hair and piercing blue eyes.
“Are you okay?” he asks, concern etched on his face.
Desperate, I blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. “Please help me!”
He raises an eyebrow. “What’s going on?”
“I need you to pretend to be my boyfriend,” I say quickly. “Just for tonight. Please.”
He looks at me for a moment, then nods slowly. “Alright. My name’s Jake.”
“Emily,” I reply breathlessly. “Thank you.”
We quickly concoct a plan as we head back towards the restaurant.
Jake will pretend to be my boyfriend and cause enough of a scene to sabotage the engagement dinner.
Golden Cage
As we approach the entrance, my phone rings. It’s Sarah.
“Emily, listen to me,” she says urgently. “Mom and Dad are planning something drastic if you don’t go through with this.”
“What do you mean?” I ask, panic rising again.
“They’re talking about cutting you off completely,” she says. “No money, no support—nothing.”
My blood runs cold.
I glance at Jake, who gives me an encouraging nod.
“Okay,” I say into the phone. “I’ll handle it.”
We step into the restaurant together, Jake’s arm around my waist for effect.
My parents’ eyes widen in shock as they see us approach.
“What is going on here?” my father demands angrily.
“This is Jake,” I say firmly. “He’s my boyfriend.”
Richard stands up abruptly, his face turning red with anger.
“This is outrageous!”
Before anyone can react further, Jake steps forward and says loudly, “Actually, Emily and I are engaged!”
The entire restaurant falls silent as everyone turns to look at us.
My mother gasps audibly while Richard looks like he’s about to explode.
Golden Cage
Richard's face turns an even deeper shade of red, his eyes narrowing into slits.
I grip Jake's hand tightly, feeling the tension radiate through my entire body.
"I'm not marrying you, Richard," I say firmly, my voice cutting through the silence like a knife.
My parents look horrified, their faces pale and stricken.
Jake steps forward, his eyes locked on Richard.
"Emily deserves to choose her own path," he says, his voice steady and unwavering.
Richard lunges at Jake, his fists clenched and eyes wild with rage.
But Jake is quick; he dodges to the side and shoves Richard back, causing him to stumble into a nearby table.
My mother gasps, her hand flying to her mouth in shock.
My father looks ready to intervene, his jaw set in a hard line.
Sarah steps between them, her hands raised in a plea for calm.
Golden Cage
"This isn't the way," she says softly, her eyes darting between Jake and Richard.
I take a deep breath and face my parents, my heart pounding in my chest.
"I'm sorry, but I love Jake," I declare, my voice steady despite the chaos around me.
The restaurant staff and patrons are watching us with wide eyes, the tension in the air palpable.
My mother looks like she's about to faint, while my father’s expression is a mix of anger and disbelief.
Richard straightens up, his face contorted with fury.
"You can't be serious," he spits out, glaring at me with a venomous look.
"I am serious," I reply firmly. "This is my life, and I won't let you or anyone else dictate it for me."
Jake steps closer to me, his presence a comforting anchor amidst the storm.
"We're leaving," he says, his voice calm but authoritative.
Golden Cage
Richard takes a step forward as if to stop us, but Sarah places a hand on his arm.
"Let them go," she says quietly. "This isn't worth it."
For a moment, it seems like Richard might ignore her and continue his tirade.
But then he stops, his shoulders slumping in defeat.
I turn to my parents one last time.
"I hope you can understand one day," I say softly before turning on my heel and walking towards the exit with Jake by my side.
As we step out into the cool night air, I feel a weight lift off my shoulders.
Jake squeezes my hand reassuringly as we walk away from the restaurant and towards an uncertain but hopeful future together.
The sound of footsteps behind us makes me turn around abruptly.
My father is standing there, his face unreadable.
"Emily," he calls out.
I freeze in place.
He takes a deep breath before speaking again.
Golden Cage
"You have one last chance to reconsider," he warns, his tone icy and unforgiving.
My heart pounds as I face him, my father, the man who has always controlled every aspect of my life.
Jake stands firm beside me, his jaw clenched in silent support.
"No, Dad," I say, my voice trembling but resolute. "I'm choosing my own happiness."
His eyes narrow, disappointment etched across his face like a permanent scar. "Then you're no longer welcome in our home," he declares coldly.
A pang of sorrow hits me, but I don't waver. I can't. Not now.
I turn to Jake, who nods supportively. His eyes are filled with determination and something else—love.
Together, we walk away from the restaurant, leaving behind the life I once knew. The future is uncertain, but I'm ready to face it with Jake by my side.
The cool night air hits us as we step onto the sidewalk. The city lights blur into a kaleidoscope of colors, and the distant hum of traffic fills the silence between us.
"Are you okay?" Jake asks softly, squeezing my hand.
I nod, though my heart feels heavy. "Yeah. I will be."
We walk in silence for a few moments before Jake speaks again. "Do you have anywhere to go tonight?"
I shake my head. "No. But I'll figure something out."
Golden Cage
He stops walking and turns to face me, his expression serious. "You can stay with me. At least until you get back on your feet."
I look into his eyes and see nothing but sincerity. "Thank you," I whisper.
We continue walking, our footsteps echoing in the empty streets. The weight of what just happened starts to settle in, but I push it aside for now. There's no turning back.
As we reach Jake's motorcycle, he hands me a helmet. "Hop on," he says with a small smile.
I take the helmet and put it on, feeling a strange mix of fear and excitement. This is it—the beginning of a new chapter.
Jake revs the engine, and we speed off into the night. The wind rushes past us, carrying away the remnants of my old life.
We arrive at Jake's apartment building—a modest but cozy place that feels worlds away from the cold luxury of my parents' home. He leads me inside and up to his apartment on the third floor.
The moment we step inside, I'm struck by how warm and inviting it is. The walls are adorned with photographs and artwork, and the scent of fresh coffee lingers in the air.
"Make yourself at home," Jake says, gesturing to the living room. "I'll grab some blankets and pillows for you."
I sit down on the couch, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.
Golden Cage
Jake returns with an armful of blankets and pillows, setting them down on the couch beside me. "It's not much, but it'll do for tonight."
"It's perfect," I say sincerely.
He sits down next to me, his presence comforting and reassuring. "We'll figure this out together," he says softly.
I nod, feeling a surge of gratitude for this man who barely knows me yet has offered me so much.
Just as I'm about to thank him again, there's a loud knock at the door. We both freeze, exchanging worried glances.
Jake stands up cautiously and walks over to the door, peering through the peephole. He turns back to me with a puzzled expression.
"It's your sister," he says quietly before opening the door.
Sarah rushes in, her face flushed with worry. "Emily! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," I assure her quickly. "What are you doing here?"
"I had to make sure you were alright," she says breathlessly. "Dad was furious when you left."
"I know," I reply softly. "But I had to do it."
Sarah looks at Jake and then back at me. "What's your plan now?"
I glance at Jake before answering. "We're going to figure it out together."
She nods slowly, her expression softening. "I'm glad you're safe."
"Thank you," I say sincerely.
Before she can respond further, there's another knock at the door—this time louder and more insistent.
Jake opens it cautiously again only to reveal Richard standing there with a look of pure rage on his face.

Chapter 2
Richard pushes past Jake, his eyes blazing.
"You think you can just walk away?" he snarls.
I step back, fear and defiance warring in my eyes.
Jake moves to block Richard, fists clenched.
"Leave now," Jake warns.
Richard lunges, but Jake grabs him, shoving him against the wall.
Sarah rushes to my side, whispering reassurances.
"It's going to be okay, Emily," she says softly.
Richard struggles, shouting threats.
"You'll regret this! You all will!"
Jake's grip tightens on Richard's collar.
"Get out," he growls through gritted teeth.
For a moment, Richard looks like he might fight back, but then his shoulders slump in defeat.
Golden Cage
He finally relents, storming out of the apartment with a final glare.
The door slams shut behind him, the sound echoing through the room.
I collapse into Jake's arms, trembling uncontrollably.
"It's over," he murmurs, holding me close.
His warmth and strength seep into me, calming my racing heart.
Sarah nods, relieved but wary of what comes next.
"We need to be careful," she says quietly. "Richard won't give up easily."
Jake looks down at me, concern etched on his face.
"We'll deal with it together," he assures me.
The room feels heavy with the aftermath of the confrontation.
I take a deep breath and pull away from Jake slightly, looking around the apartment.
Golden Cage
The cozy atmosphere now feels like a sanctuary compared to the chaos outside.
"Thank you," I whisper to Jake and Sarah. "For everything."
Jake nods, his eyes softening as he looks at me.
"We're in this together," he repeats.
Sarah squeezes my hand gently.
"You're not alone, Emily."
I manage a small smile despite the lingering fear.
"I know."
We sit down on the couch, the tension slowly dissipating as we talk about what to do next.
Plans are made for staying safe and keeping Richard at bay.
But for now, in this moment of calm after the storm, I feel a glimmer of hope.
Golden Cage
Jake's phone buzzes, cutting through the tense silence.
He glances at the screen, his brow furrowing as he sees an unknown number.
With a hesitant look, he answers, "Hello?"
A menacing voice crackles through the line. "You think you can just take her away?"
Jake's grip tightens on the phone, his knuckles turning white.
Emily and Sarah exchange worried glances, sensing the change in his demeanor.
"Who is it?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Jake's jaw clenches, his eyes darkening. "It's Richard."
He hangs up abruptly and looks at us, his expression grim. "We need to be careful."
Sarah's face pales, and I feel a cold shiver run down my spine.
The reality of our situation hits me like a ton of bricks.
"We can't stay here," Jake says firmly. "It's not safe."
I nod in agreement, my heart racing with both fear and determination.
"Where will we go?"
Jake thinks for a moment before responding. "We can stay at Mark's place for a while. He owes me a favor."
Sarah nods quickly. "That's a good idea. Let's pack up and get out of here."
We move swiftly through the apartment, gathering our essentials.
Golden Cage
The cozy atmosphere that once felt like a sanctuary now feels suffocating under the weight of our urgency.
As I stuff clothes into a bag, my hands tremble slightly.
Jake notices and places a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"We'll get through this together," he says softly.
I look up at him, drawing strength from his unwavering resolve.
"Thank you," I whisper.
Sarah finishes packing her things and joins us by the door.
"Ready?" she asks, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes.
I take a deep breath and nod. "Ready."
We leave the apartment, stepping out into the cool night air once more.
The city lights cast long shadows on the pavement as we make our way to Jake's motorcycle parked nearby.
Jake hands me a helmet and then one to Sarah. "Hop on," he instructs.
With a mixture of fear and determination, I climb onto the bike behind Jake while Sarah takes her place behind me.
The engine roars to life, and we speed off into the night.
The wind rushes past us as we navigate through the city streets.
Every turn feels like we're leaving behind another piece of our old lives.
Golden Cage
My heart pounds in my chest, but I hold on tightly to Jake, trusting him to lead us to safety.
After what feels like an eternity, we arrive at Mark's apartment building.
It's an older structure with ivy climbing up its brick facade.
Jake parks the bike and helps us off before leading us inside.
Mark greets us at the door with a concerned expression.
"What's going on?" he asks as he ushers us inside.
Jake quickly explains the situation while Mark listens intently.
When he's done, Mark nods understandingly.
"You can stay here as long as you need," he says firmly.
Relief washes over me as we settle into Mark's living room.
The space is small but welcoming, with warm lighting and comfortable furniture.
It feels like a safe haven amidst the chaos we've been facing.
As we sit down on the couch, Jake pulls me close, his presence comforting and grounding.
Sarah sits beside us, her hand resting gently on mine.
"We'll figure this out," Jake says quietly. "Together."
I nod, feeling a renewed sense of determination.
Whatever comes next, we'll face it head-on.
