My friend Mia invited me to a swimsuit party. But the moment I arrived, I realized something was off. Everywhere I looked, there were only girls—laughing, chatting, and having fun in the pool. And then I realized—I’m the only guy at the party.

Jamie Carter

the only male guest, friends with Mia, average build with short brown hair, curious and slightly awkward.

I was unpacking my new bag when Mia called.
"Hey, what’s up?"
Mia and I were friends since high school.
In our senior year, she finally made it onto the cheerleading squad after trying out three years in a row.
Her last attempt failed miserably with an embarrassing tumble during tryouts, but the head coach felt sorry for her and gave her a spot anyway as an alternate.
She got to wear the uniform but rarely got to actually perform during games unless one of the regular girls got sick or hurt.
That aside, we remained close throughout college despite going to different institutions and studying different majors; she into communications and me into computer science.
Now that we both graduated back home two years ago, it seemed like we hung out less often than before even though there shouldn’t have been any change.
It might’ve had something to do with our work schedules conflicting or us simply growing apart over time for whatever reason.
"Hey, Mia," I replied.
"What’s up?"
"I’m having a little party at my place. Want to come?"
I hesitated for a second.
I didn’t have anything better to do, and it was Mia.
"Sure, I’ll be there in an hour."
"Awesome, see you then."
Mia lived in the same neighborhood as me, so it only took about ten minutes to get to her house.
I walked into the backyard where the party was happening and saw everyone swimming in the pool or lounging around it.
The air was filled with laughter and splashing water.
I scanned the crowd and saw that it was all girls—every single one of them wearing bikinis.
I froze for a second, realizing that I was the only guy here.

Mia waved at me from across the pool, but I barely managed a smile back.
I walked over to an empty chair and sat down, feeling more awkward by the minute.
Some of the girls glanced my way, whispering to each other and giggling.
I fidgeted with my phone in my hands, wondering if I should just leave or stick around for a bit. I finally mustered up enough courage to say, "Uhm, hey, girls."
They all turned to look at me and smiled back.
"Hey!"
One of them said.
"How’s it going?"
Another one asked.
"Not bad," I replied.
"Just enjoying the sunshine."
"Yeah, it’s great out today," another girl said.
