I was in the middle of a game when it happened.
One minute I was fighting off a group of infected, and the next I was standing in the middle of a park.
It was a beautiful day, with clear blue skies and a gentle breeze that rustled the leaves of the trees.
I could hear the sound of children playing, and birds chirping in the distance.
It was so peaceful that for a moment, I forgot where I was.
Then I looked down at myself and realized that something was very wrong.
I was still wearing my black leather jacket and jeans, but my hands were no longer covered in blood and gore.
My skin was smooth and unblemished, and my fingers were long and slender.
I flexed my hands experimentally, marveling at how different they felt.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.
The air was fresh and clean, a stark contrast to the stench of decay I was used to in the game.
I turned slowly, taking in my surroundings.
Children laughed as they chased each other around a playground.
A couple strolled hand in hand along a winding path.
Birds flitted from tree to tree, their songs filling the air.
It all felt so real, too real.
My heart began to race as the reality of my situation set in.
This wasn't just some hyper-realistic cutscene or VR glitch.
I was actually here, in this park, in this world.
Panic bubbled up inside me, threatening to overwhelm me.
I needed to sit down, to think.
I spotted a bench nearby and made my way over, my legs feeling like jelly beneath me.
I collapsed onto the bench, burying my face in my hands.
What was happening?
How did I get here?
And more importantly, how was I going to get back?
"Alex?" a voice called out, snapping me out of my spiraling thoughts.
I looked up to see a young woman hurrying towards me, her dark hair bouncing with each step.
She wore a look of shock and excitement on her face, like she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"Mia?" I asked hesitantly, recognizing her from the game development team.
She nodded vigorously, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Yes! It's me! I can't believe it's really you!"
She reached out and grabbed my hands, her touch grounding me in this strange new reality. "I've been tracking the game's glitch for weeks," she explained breathlessly. "When I saw you disappear from the server, I had a feeling something like this might happen."
"You knew this could happen?" I asked incredulously. "And you didn't warn anyone?"
Mia winced, guilt flashing across her face. "We didn't think it was possible," she admitted. "We thought it was just a minor bug. But when you vanished... I knew something was seriously wrong."
I shook my head, trying to wrap my mind around everything she was saying. "So what now? How do I get back?"
Mia bit her lip, glancing around nervously. "I'm not sure," she confessed. "But I promise I'll help you figure it out. We just need to stay calm and take things one step at a time."
I nodded slowly, taking comfort in her words. At least I wasn't alone in this nightmare.
"Okay," I said finally. "What's our first step?"
Before Mia could answer, a loud crash echoed through the park.
We both turned towards the sound, our eyes widening in horror.
A group of menacing figures emerged from the trees, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light.
They moved with an eerie grace, their intentions clear as they advanced towards us.
"Run!" Mia shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me to my feet.
